Project Summary

Kahn, Litwin, Renza & Co. is one of the largest accounting and business consulting firms in New England, with offices in Providence, Newport County, Waltham and Boston. KLR is one of Envision’s oldest clients (our offices also happen to be located in their Providence office – so they are also our closest client), so when they came to us in need of a new site to better reflect the growth they have experienced over the past few years, both in terms of offices and staff as well as breadth of services, we were excited for the opportunity.

After presenting the client with a number of design examples, my design was chosen and with the help of the entire team at Envision, we created a very robust site complete with a dynamically generated news system to allow the client to easily manage this critical section of their site most effectively, a feed directly from their company blog and a sitemap that covered the range of services they offer and industries they specialize in.

The biggest challenge I faced on this project was the Flash element that is used on the homepage of the site. The design called for large panoramic images of Providence, Newport and Boston – which weren’t a problem at all to animate with Flash, but the main image on the site, the ‘KLR wall' outside of their Providence office, created a challenge. The top of the wall was designed to extend all the way to the top of the page, which forced me to rethink how I would create the Flash movie. Instead of a simple strip placed underneath the navigation, I ended up having to create a much larger Flash movie and use the CSS Z-index property to place the branding and navigation on top the Flash in precisely the right place, essentially making the animated element a background. This solution was tricky to get working cross browser and I owe much thanks to fellow Envision designer Robyn Brechun for beating that thing into submission.
